Nespresso Atelier (Discontinued) Review 2023

I am a sophisticated lover of espresso machines and drip coffee makers as they grind fresh coffee beans and deliver a fantastic espresso shot. I have been using the Breville Barista Express for a long time and grind my whole beans on my own with its integrated grinder. After some time, I replaced it with its premium model, i.e., Breville barista touch. I had an amazing experience with this machine. Its one-touch operation and advanced settings and features enhanced my experience. I also visited coffee shops now and then to enjoy iced recipes/coffee, mocha, and other cold beverages. 

I renovated my apartment, and during that, the water reservoir of Barista touch broke down and started to leak. Now, I had to replace it. One of my friends suggested the Essenza Mini; it was a compact machine but lacked a frother, so I rejected it. I thought about French Press, — AeroPress, — Moka Pot, and Percolators, but it lacks a grinder and a frother. I also thought about drip coffee makers and Keurig coffee makers, but they can’t brew high-quality espresso, and I also did not drink long coffee.

I searched for things independently, and the Nespresso Lattissima series impressed me greatly. But I just renovated my apartment, and my new Barista Touch broke down, so I thought I would buy a machine for temporary use, and when I get stable, I will buy a premium model. So, I found myself favoring the Nespresso Atelier. It was a discontinued model, so I bought it for temporary use. 

When I used it and brewed drinks with it, I got great drinks and a spectacular experience. When it delivered me cold foam, I brewed mocha, frappe, etc. I was shocked. In short, it was the all-in-one machine that I needed.

Nespresso Machines Overview

Nespresso offers two lines; OriginalLine and VertuoLine

OriginalLine machines: These machines use powerful 19 bars pressure and extract the perfect flavor and premium aromas from OriginalLine Nespresso Pods. They deliver fantastic espresso shots with dense crema. These machines are compatible with Nespresso OriginalLine pods and third-party Nespresso pods and are best for those who drink coffee regularly. 

VertuoLine machines: These machines use the Centrifusion technique, scan the pod barcode, spin the pods at 7000 RPM, and pull the desired shot. These machines work well with VertuoLine pods only, but after the Nespresso and Starbucks partnership, they are also compatible with Starbucks by Nespresso Vertuoline pods. — VertuoLine machines are best for those who drink coffee now and then.

Nespresso Atelier Overview

• It makes in-cup froth automatically.
• It offers 9 preset beverages such as; ristretto, espresso, lungo, cappuccino, latte macchiato, café viennois, mocha, chilled frappé, hot and cold milk foam.
• It has a small 34 oz water reservoir and is only available in Europe and Asia.

Like Lattissima machines, it offers preset beverages, but some factors differentiate them. 

• Atelier has 4.7″ width while Lattissima machines have 6.1″ width.
• Atelier has a more modern design than Lattissima machines.
• It has a detachable farthing arm or whisk.
• It delivers cold foam, while the Lattissima series lacks this feature.

Nespresso Atelier Size And Design

When I unboxed my Nespresso Atelier, its sleek, modern, and fancy design impressed me greatly. The good thing is that it comes with 14 free Nespresso capsules. I set it up in just 5 minutes, and it easily fit on my kitchen countertop due to its dimensions WxDxH, i.e., 4.7 x 17.0 x 11.0 inches. Nespresso Atelier is similar to other pod machines except that it has nine recipe buttons and delivers hot and cold foam. These settings, features/services make it unique among all other Nespresso machines. The machine is your personal workbench with a technology that allows you to adjust the position of the frother by lifting the spout up and down.

Nespresso Atelier has a removable 34 oz water reservoir. It is fitted at the back and offers easy cleaning and refilling. Its quantity did not bother me as I am single, and it brews many drinks without needing refilling. 

Ease Of Use

When I brewed for the first time, I did not think it would be so easy. I followed the manual’s instructions. I filled the water tank and turned on the machine. It took only 3 seconds to heat up, and my machine is ready to brew; that’s amazing. I opened the lever, placed the capsule, and closed the lever. I filled the cup with enough cold milk, placed it under the frother, adjusted the frother, and pressed the cold foam and mocha button. The machine delivered me a splendid and perfect mocha drink without any mess.

Coffee-Quality

Nespresso Atelier comes with a wide range of pods and delivers splendid espresso shots and authentic coffee cups. When I brewed espresso, it delivered me a well-balanced shot at 67.9 degrees Celsius; so it was hotter. When I brewed coffee, it delivered excellent coffee; however, it did not brew long coffees. If you want to brew long coffees (coffee that works for you), check out one of the Nespresso VertuoLine machines. 

Milk Frothing

It is very easy to use the Atelier’s frother. I placed the frother and adjusted it over the cup. When I pressed the hot foam button, it automatically frothed the milk and delivered me perfect hot foam. Perfect froth enhances drink quality. To get the perfect foam, 

• The frothing arm/whisk should be at the milk surface. You can easily adjust the frother by lifting the spout up and down. 
• Use cold, pressurized, skimmed, or semi-skimmed milk.
• For hot or cold foam, you can also use any type of milk and plant-based alternatives such as oat, almond, and soy drink.

After frothing, I inserted the capsule and pressed the cappuccino button. The Atelier did the rest and delivered me a smooth, rich, excellent, and velvety-textured one-touch cappuccino drink. And come the summer days, cool down with an iced recipe, thanks to the cold frothing possibilities. I made cold froth and brewed cold coffee and milk recipes using pieces of chocolate and ice.

Nespresso Atelier Capsules

I brewed my drink with OriginalLine Nespresso pods that come with Atelier. The drink’s quality, texture, body, and taste were beyond anything. I also tried 3rd-party Nespresso capsules, and the machine delivered the same sumptuous drink as delivered with Nespresso OriginalLine pods. Unfortunately, Nespresso Atelier does not work with VertuoLine pods and Starbucks by Nespresso Vertuo Pods. If you want to brew long coffees with VertuoLine pods, search out one of the VertuoLine machines. 

How To Make Cold Milk Froth, Ristretto With Atelier?

For cold milk froth,

• Add cold milk in a Nespresso cup; you can use soy, almond, or oat milk to prepare milk foam. 
• Place the cup and adjust the position of the frother into the cup.
• Press the cold foam button, and the machine automatically froths the milk.
• The machine will deliver you perfect cold froth. Perfect froth enhances the drink quality.
• Make sure to clean the frother or whisk after every use. 

For ristretto,

• Open the lever, insert the capsule in the capsule compartment, and close the lever.
• Adjust the drip tray position, place the cup under the outlet, and press the ristretto button.
• The machine will do the rest and deliver the excellent drink directly into your cup. 
• To stop brewing, press the selected button (ristretto) again.

Nespresso Atelier Cleaning and Descaling Alert

Atelier offers quick and easy cleaning. I emptied the capsule container and washed the drip tray, water tank, and frother with hot soapy water. I filled the tank with freshwater and pressed the lungo button three times; the machine automatically ran the cleaning cycle. 

It also has a descaling alert, depending on the water hardness level. For descaling;

• Empty the capsule container and drip tray.
• Fill the water tank with a descaling solution.
• Place the container under the outlet.
• Press and hold the lungo and ristretto button for 3 seconds; the machine will enter the descaling mode.
• The machine will perform the descaling process automatically.
