What is Ethiopia Nespresso Original

With aromas of wild and musky jasmine, white lily, bergamot, and orange blossoms, a delicately fresh and floral Pure Origin Lungo, the Bukeela ka Ethiopia reveals the taste of southern and western Ethiopia. It is prepared with wet-processed beautiful Arabica beans, lightly and long roasted beans to create a complex bouquet. Nespresso combines the flavors and aromas of all Ethiopian coffees into one capsule and your coffee cup. This capsule comes in two shapes: OriginalLine and VertuoLine.

Nespresso Ethiopia Original Taste

When we tasted OriginalLine Ethiopia Nespresso, the flowery aroma soothed us. It initially tasted a bit bitter to us, but later this bitterness balanced out. The complex jasmine notes hit our palate and we drank the whole cup in no time. We found it dominated by woody and cereal notes with traces of peppery notes at the end. We felt that the flavors of various jasmine blossoms accumulated in my single coffee cup. Overall we found OriginalLine Ethiopia to be very well balanced. We brewed Ethiopia in all seasons; it never disappointed us and always surprised us with its hidden strength.

Major Features of Nespresso Ethiopia

We focused on 10 major features of Nespresso Original Ethiopia; these attributes enable us to figure out how Ethiopian-originated Nespresso Ethiopia differs from all other Vertuo capsules. These characteristics also estimate whether we take this flowery cup in summers or winters. Let’s study these attributes in detail.

Origin — Ethiopian Arabica Beans

Nespresso Original Ethiopia is a blend of dark roasted Ethiopian Arabica beans (south and Western). The signature drying method gives this sumptuous Original pod rich, wild, and flowery aromatic notes.

Roasting Level — 2 out of 5

Roasting Profile

In Nespresso Ethiopia, the Arabica beans are dark and light roasted. The roast level directly affects your drink’s acidity. Dark roasting gives candy or syrup flavor, indicating that the sugar is caramelized, while light-medium roast gives a fruity aroma or flavor. So, Ethiopia possesses sweet (fruit jam) and flowery aroma and flavor.

Aroma — Flowery and Jasmine Bouquet

When I brewed a lungo shot with Nespresso Ethiopia, the complex aroma of the jasmine bouquet (lily, bergamot and orange blossoms) impressed me greatly. Its aroma hinted at South and Western Ethiopian Arabica beans. I smelled its scent again and again. Its floral aroma soothed my thoughts, and I felt relief for a few moments.

Acidity — 3 out of 5

The dark-roasted Ethiopian Arabica beans balanced their acidity very well. You either feel mild tang-like or acrid lemon-like acidity in your drinks, but I did not feel any harshness in Ethiopia. The complex jasmine notes and rich wild aroma make your morning perfect.

Bitterness — 1 out of 5

Each coffee cup has a unique level of bitterness. You can feel fresh fruit, honey, or caramel-like sweetness. You can also easily identify whether it has white or brown sugar, honey or maple syrup etc. When I brewed Ethiopia coffee, I felt a bit of bitterness, but later on, its bitterness was balanced out with rich fruit jam notes.

Body — 1 out of 5

Nespresso Ethiopia delivers smooth, light drinks that you can easily slurp down your throat. The body is the weight of coffee you feel on your tongue. Nespresso Ethiopia is a blend of dark and roasted Arabica beans, so it delivers smooth drinks with a musky jasmine aroma and ripe, rich fruit jam notes.

Caffeine content — 77-85 mg

Nespresso capsules (OriginalLine or VertuoLine) always fulfill your caffeine needs. Its one capsule contains about 80 mg of caffeine and is enough for one standard coffee cup. Ethiopia is an OriginalLine capsule with standard caffeine content. When we measured it in our lab, we found 75-85 mg of caffeine in this sumptuous Nespresso pod.

Flavor — Fruit jam and orange blossom

When I brewed Ethiopia and took my first sip, I felt flowery notes on my tongue. The rich fruit jam and musky jasmine notes hit my palate in another sip. I took sip after sip, and each sip gave me a different flavor, and I felt I was drinking a bouquet of different coffee flavors.

Intensity — 4 out of 13

Intensity is determined by the level of bitterness and acidity in your drink. Ethiopia is a blend of dark and light roasted Ethiopian Arabica beans with low intensity. The dark and light roast gives it a sweet, fruity, floral aroma and flavor.

Finish — Woody And Cereal Notes

When I finished Nespresso Ethiopia coffee, I felt a bit bitter in the end, but later on, it was dominated by woody and cereal notes with traces of peppery notes at the end. I found Ethiopia coffee smooth and lingering. Its complex fruity and floral aroma is preserved in my mind. Whenever I am reminded of this flowery drink, I want to brew and drink a smooth cup of Nespresso Ethiopia.

Nespresso Ethiopia Brew Size

Nespresso Ethiopia is an OriginalLine pod and only brewed with Nespresso OriginalLine machines. OriginalLine machines offer three brew sizes.

  • Espresso — 1.35 oz
  • Ristretto — 0.85 oz
  • Lungo — 3.7 oz

Nespresso Ethiopia delivers a 3.7 oz balanced lungo shot. We also brew other cup sizes with it, but we got only harsh drinks. So, it is better to brew only lungo with Original Ethiopia.

Nespresso Ethiopia Price

We found that the pod-based Nespresso machine is an affordable brewing system compared to regular visits to coffee shops that are expensive and time-consuming. Although you cannot evaluate how much you can save by brewing at home. If a person spends $4 at a local coffee house, but if he buys Keurig or Nespresso capsules, how much money he will save is shown in the table below.

Capsule or pod  Cost, 1 Serving Cost, 365 Servings Savings Over Coffee Shop
Keurig K-Cup $0.35-$0.65 $219 $1,241
Nespresso Vertuo $0.90-$1.25 $402 $1,058
Nespresso Original $0.70-$0.85 $292 $1,168
Coffee Shop $3.50-$4.50 $1,460 $0

The above table shows that if you brew your desired milk and coffee recipes with Nespresso Ethiopia at home, you can save up to 80% of your money. Not only with Nespresso Ethiopia, but you can save the same amount with any of the OriginalLine or VertuoLine pods.

The History of Bukeela Ka Ethiopia OriginalLine — The First Nespresso Pure Origin Lungo Grand Cru

This Nespresso capsule has a wonderful floral aroma with wild notes of musk and wood in a pure Arabic blend.

21.01.2014, it was around this time that Nespresso was thinking of launching Bakila Ka Ethiopia as the 22nd Grand Cru coffee. The first suggested name was Bukeela ka Ethiopia meaning Ethiopian coffee beans.

Bukeela Ka Ethiopia Reflects The Essence Of Ethiopian Coffee

Nespresso wanted to produce one of its capsules from coffee beans from the region that is the birthplace of coffee. So that those who drink it can enjoy coffee as well as learn about the history of coffee. It was a unique idea to bring awareness about coffee in this wonderful way. I think Nespresso has delivered its message to coffee drinkers very well because this capsule is the first pure origin Grand Cru from Africa that specifically reflects the essence of Ethiopian coffee.

The Origin Of The Capsule Name Is From Africa.

When I studied African languages, especially Ethiopian, I found out that the Ethiopian name Bokela is derived from Amharic, a local language of Ethiopia. It means “coffee beans from Ethiopia.” Bukeela Ka Ethiopia’s copper color signifies the capsule’s special connection to the African land, evoking an African accent.

A Blend of Two Types of Ethiopian Coffee

Ethiopia is known throughout the world as the origin of coffee. When I visited Ethiopia to research coffee beans, I discovered a rich diversity of coffee trees, both cultivated and wild. Nespresso claims that Bukeela Ka Ethiopia’s unique Ethiopian blend is made from beans from two different regions of Ethiopia.

Sidama Coffee Beans From Ethiopia

For Bukeela Ka Ethiopia, Coffee beans are handpicked in Sidama, southern Ethiopia. I noticed that Nespresso wet-processes the beautiful Arabica beans here. To create a complex bouquet, these green coffee beans are roasted long and lightly in Nespresso’s roastery. When the pods are brewed, they emit aromas of jasmine, white lily, bergamot, and orange blossoms.

Coffee Beans Of Western Ethiopia

Western Ethiopia is famous for growing wild Arabica. A blend of washed wild and musky Arabica beans imported here is deep and short roasted. Bukeela Ka Ethiopia’s Grand Cru blend brings aromas of wild, musky, and cultivated Ethiopian beans to your cup as you brew this capsule.

The First Lungo Grand Cru In The Nespresso Pure Origin Range

Bukeela Ka Ethiopia is the first Grand Cru of Nespresso’s Lungo family to introduce a new dimension of Nespresso capsules to its fans.

Nespresso’s lungo family includes Fortissio Lungo (Strength 7), Vivalto Lungo (Strength 4), Linizio Lungo (Strength 7), Decaffeinato Lungo (Strength 3), and Decaffeinato Lungo (Strength 3), but I prefer the Ethiopian flavor overall.

When we tasted all the Nespresso Pure Origin Grand Cru capsules, we could smell the coffee beans from the famous countries from which they were produced in the cups. Each cup of Pure Origin evoked the subtle, refined flavors of the country of origin. Each cup of coffee was assigned a specific region classification in terms of aroma, intensity, and location.

Bukeela’s Ethiopia stands out with its floral and wild notes at a lower intensity of 3. At the same time, its other cousins Dulsão do Brasil, has a 4 intensity with a sweet and sour profile, Rosabaya de Colombia at 6 with a fruity and winey profile. At the same time, Indria from India has an intensity of 10 with its spicy profile.

Among all Nespresso’s Grand Cru and Pure Origin capsules, I found none to match Ethiopia in flavor and size, except for Indonesia. I found both the Indonesia and Ethiopia capsules better than all the other Pure Origin capsules. So if you want to try a capsule after Ethiopia, Indonesia might be your best choice.

Where Can You Buy These Capsules?

Bukeela Ka Ethiopia and all of Nespresso’s Original Line and Vertuoline capsules can be purchased through Nespresso boutiques, Amazon, brick-and-mortar stores, and Nespresso Customer Relationship Centers worldwide, including in the US and UK.

Our Final Verdict: Vertuo Nespresso Ethiopia Vs. Original

As shown in the table above, both Nespresso Original and Vertue Ethiopia have the same basic features and specs. There is only a slight difference in their aroma and taste. This difference is also because the original line machines use 19 bar pressure to extract the capsules as opposed to the Vertue machines, which use centrifugation forces.

When we prepared two separate cups of coffee and espresso in our lab, Nespresso Ethiopia Vertue and Original, the two coffees were almost identical except for the following differences:

  • The original Nespresso Ethiopia Espresso was hotter than the Vertue Ethiopian coffee.
  • The crema on the top of the Original Nespresso Ethiopian Espresso cup was less thick, and the bubbles were very fine and gave a very good mouthfeel. In comparison, the crema on top of the Vertue Ethiopian coffee was thicker than the original, but it was more aerated and didn’t have a great mouthfeel.
  • The Original Nespresso Ethiopia had a deeper scent than the Vertue and felt good to my nostrils. My entire lab was filled with its aroma while the scent of the Vertue Ethiopia Nespresso barely reached me from the cup.
  • The original Nespresso Ethiopia was full of bitterness with the first sip. Afterward, it converted into a balanced espresso, while the Vertuo Ethiopia Nespresso was smooth and relatively less bitter.
