It is a simple but classic coffee brewing device, invented in 1852 and was patented in the United States in 1929. It is also known as a press pot, coffee press, cafetière, cafetière à piston, and coffee plunger.
It is one of the easiest, least expensive, least time-consuming, and classic methods of brewing great healthy coffee from a strainer-like plunger into a container. You steep coffee grounds in hot water and then press them out.

By following the steps right, you may avoid the most common mistakes that muck up your coffee. And also you may produce a great cup.
Wash and preheat your container (carafe) and place it on a dry table or kitchen counter. You can also preheat the serving cups plunger and container lid along with the carafe.
Preheat your utensils with hot water, so they’ll not let the freshness and taste of your drink get lost. During preheating time, grind your whole coffee beans in a coarse grinding size as the coarseness of sea salt.
Finely ground coffee becomes muddy when you press it and results in a bitter taste.
After one minute of preheating time, get the water out of your container (carafe) while remaining your serving cups full of hot water.
Now your Carafe is warmed up! And you’re ready for the next step!
In this step, first, we set the water to coffee ratio. I highly recommend setting 1:15 for your 2 cups (500 ml or grams) of coffee, which is 6 heaping tablespoons (30g) coffee and 2 cups (500 ml or 16.16 oz) of water.
Now add your coffee grounds to your container (carafe), and level them evenly by giving them a gentle shake.
First, set your water temperature to 205°F. Allow the boiling water to cool for 30 seconds until it will reach to 205°F, pour half of the water into the carafe in a circular motion, and stir it gently with a spoon to submerge all the grounds.
Let your coffee grounds stand for 30 seconds to bloom, so they will release gases that are necessary for better extraction. Now your coffee grounds have become bubbly and increased in volume. Please break the crust of the coffee grounds by giving them a gentle stir with a spoon.
At this step, pour the remaining hot water (205°F) into your carafe. Cover the lid and reinsert the plunger into the carafe carefully above the coffee grounds.
Please don’t plunge yet.
In this step, I’ll tell you how long the steeping time is? The normal steeping time is 4 minutes. Set your timer and let the coffee grounds steep for 4 minutes. You can increase the steeping time a bit to get a more robust taste.
Now press the plunger (for 30 seconds) all down slowly and gently, exerting steady pressure. Please avoid applying extra force because if you push the plunger too hard and too, it may cause agitation to your coffee grounds, and the result is bitterness to your beverage.
To achieve a full expression of your coffee, decant it immediately after brewing, so it doesn’t become bitter or chalky.
Avoid leaving your coffee in the container (carafe) for more time; rather, over-extraction may cause bitterness in your coffee and may turn you off.
Decant your coffee into your favorite cup and enjoy. It will win you over with its taste!
Congratulations! You have done an excellent job! Now you have mastered “How to use a coffee plunger.”
Please rinse your utensils with water and detergent, dry them, and save them for your next use.
