Troubleshooting 16 Common Nespresso Essenza Mini Problems And How To Fix Them

Quick Navigation

Spread the love

Once, a person in a cafe told me that for him, “coffee” is a synonym for “love,” and the coffee maker is his “Babes”. At that time, I hysterically laughed at this logic. But now, after being addicted to coffee, I can literally understand his feelings. You know what? I realized it when one morning, my dear Nespresso Essenza Mini stopped working. Ughh!

No doubt, Nespresso Essenza Mini is a durable machine but it can also encounter problems with time such as water leaking, slow coffee extraction etc. However, with a little effort you can troubleshoot and resolve the issue yourself. What? Is a thought articulating in your mind how you can fix Nespresso Essenza Mini yourself. No worries! Below I have mentioned a list of common issues and their fixes.  So without wasting any time, let’s conquer all the hurdles on your way to getting a hot and yummy coffee!

Problem 1: My Coffee Is Not Hot Enough

Your Nespresso Essenza Mini is working, but the temperature of your coffee is not according to your desire. It’s one of the common issues that occur in Essenza Mini, but it is very easy to resolve. Let’s find out its cause and solution!

Cause 1: Machine Needs To Be Descaled

Maintenance (cleaning/descaling) is essential to keep your coffee machine in good working condition. Nespresso itself recommends descaling your coffee maker once every 3-6 months. Therefore, If you haven’t descale your machine, then it must be the main reason for your coffee maker not producing a hot cup of coffee.

Solution: Descale Nespresso Essenza Mini

Quickly bring out the Nespresso descaling solution from the cabinet and start descaling your Nespresso Essenza Mini. However, if you don’t have it, then place an order on Amazon now.

Let’s discuss the descaling process!

  1. Switch on your Nespresso Essenza Mini.
  2. Eject the capsule into the used capsule container.
  3. Empty the drip base, drip tray, and used capsule container.
  4. Pour the whole liquid from the Nespresso descaling sachet into the water tank.
  5. Then, fill the water tank with potable water up to the mark labeled 0.6 L.
  6. Place a container of a minimum 1 L capacity under the coffee spout.
  7. Now, enter the “Descaling mode” by pressing both the Espresso and Lungo button for 5 seconds.
  8. LEDs of both buttons will blink to confirm.
  9. Press the Lungo button and wait until the solution starts flowing out of the coffee spout.
  10. Pour the used solution from the container into the water tank and repeat the process.
  11. At last, rinse and fill the water tank with fresh potable water.

Cause 2: Nespresso Is In Descaling Mode

Another reason behind getting a lukewarm or cold coffee is that your Essenza Mini is still in descaling mode. If the descaling process gets interrupted in between either intentionally (terminated by you) or unintentionally (load shedding or any other reason), the machine gets stuck in the descaling mode.

Solution: Exit Descaling Mode

To exit the descaling mode, press and hold both the coffee buttons (Espresso and Lungo) simultaneously for 5 seconds.

Cause 3: Lower Machine Pressure

Sometimes, continuous use leads to low pressure inside your coffee maker and it may affect the temperature of your coffee. Does it seem difficult to resolve? No, it’s simple. Let’s discuss it!

Solution: Brew Without Capsule

Thus, if the pressure has decreased, then brew approximately 5 Lungo cups without inserting capsules. After 5 brewing cycles, your coffee maker will build up the pressure again and start brewing hot water (and hot coffee also). Let’s discuss the process in detail!

  • How To Brew 5 Lungo Cups?
  1. Place a container of a minimum 1L capacity under the coffee spout.
  2. Switch on your brewer.
  3. Raise the lever completely to check whether the capsule is present or not (perform the brewing without a capsule).
  4. Now, lower the lever and close it.
  5. Press the Lungo button to start rinsing your machine.
  6. Repeat the process 5 times.
  7. Now, your coffee machine has build-up the pressure again!

Cause 4: Using A Cold Cup Or Spoon

Does it seem like nonsense? Yes, a little bit, but sometimes a minor thing can be of great importance. Therefore, if you are pouring coffee into a cold cup and also using a spoon to stir, then there are chances that your coffee temperature will lower due to the transfer of heat.

Solution: Use Pre-Heated Utensils

One of the best solutions to this problem is to use a pre-heated cup and spoon. So, once you pour your favorite coffee into this cup, it doesn’t get cold, and you can have a perfect sip.

To preheat the utensils you can do this;

  • Add warm water to your cup/dip the spoon in warm water (up to the neck).
  • Pour water into the cup and place it in the microwave for a few seconds.

Cause 5: Addition Of Cold Milk

Do you love to add milk to your coffee cup? I know it adds more flavor and taste to your coffee cup. But do you think it can be the reason for lowering the temperature of your coffee? Yes, if you use cold milk in your hot beverage, then it will surely lower the temperature of your coffee.

Solution: Use Warm/Lukewarm Milk

The best solution to this problem is to use warm/lukewarm milk. If your Nespresso machine has an in-built Aerccino or Milk froth function, then do both warm and froth the milk before adding it to your brewed coffee. However, if there is no such function, then you can also purchase a separate “Milk Frother”. Furthermore, you can also warm your milk in a microwave or on the stove.

However, if none of the above solutions works, then contact the Nespresso Club. For details, see the section “When to seek professional help”.

Problem 2: Nothing Is Coming Out Of My Nespresso Essenza Mini.

Did you switch on your machine, place a cup and push the brew button, but no coffee, no water comes out? Oh, Jesus Christ! One of the worst things that can happen to a coffee lover. The only question that arises to mind is “Why is my Nespresso Essenza mini not brewing?” as you did nothing bad to it. I can understand it’s frustrating because a coffee lover’s day can’t start without having a sip of hot coffee. Let’s resolve your problem and make your day happy!

Cause 1: Essenza Mini Needs Priming

Are you using your Essenza Mini for the first time or after a long time of storage? If yes, then it needs to be primed first to make it work properly. Let’s do it!

Solution: Prime Nespresso Essenza Mini

It is just about “First time setup & water rinsing brew cycle”. Follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. First, rinse and fill the water tank with freshwater and place it back on the brewer.
  2. Place a container under the coffee outlet.
  3. Switch “ON” your machine.
  4. Lift the lever to make sure the absence of any capsule in the machine.
  5. Now, close the lever and press the “Lungo” button to start rinsing.
  6. Repeat this operation 3 times.

See details here “How to use Nespresso Essenza Mini”.

Cause 2: Water Tank Is Empty Or Mispositioned

The possible reason for “nothing coming out of the coffee spout” can be an empty or misplaced water tank. Therefore, it is necessary to check the water tank before starting brewing.

Solution: Fill & Place The Water Tank Properly

Check that your water tank is filled and in the right position. If not, then refill the water tank up to the MAX FILL line with fresh potable water and place it appropriately in its position.

Cause 3: Coffee Capsule Is Mispositioned

How can coffee come out of the spout when the capsule is not positioned accurately in the capsule holder? When the capsule is not in the right position, the grid plate’s raised profiles can’t poke holes in it and water can’t pass through the coffee grounds.

Solution: Insert Capsule Properly

Check that the capsule is inserted properly in the capsule holder. What is the right position of the capsule?

  1. Lift the handle fully up before loading the capsule.
  2. Hold your capsule in a direction that the foil side is toward you and drop it inside the pod holder
  3. Then, after inserting the capsule, slowly lower the handle halfway so that the capsule gets loaded in the right alignment.
  4. Once it gets inserted again, lift the handle up before locking it.

Cause 4: Blockage In Your Brewer

Due to continuous use, dirt can accumulate in your coffee maker, which may lead to blockages. Furthermore, the water in every region/area has different content concentrations, such as high minerals, calcium, and magnesium. These contents accumulate in your machine and develop scales. Therefore, it is a must to descale your Essenza Mini once every 3-6 months.

Solution: Descale & Clean Nespresso Essenza Mini

To know the descaling process, see the section “Descale Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 1 (Cause 1)”.

How To Clean My Nespresso Essenza Mini?

  1. First of all, switch off and unplug your Essenza Mini.
  2. Empty the drip tray, drip tray base, and capsule container periodically.
  3. Remove the water tank along with its lid.
  4. Clean the inside of the water tank, and the underside of the lid with odorless detergent and rinse with warm/lukewarm water.
  5. Now, dry all parts with a clean, lint-free towel or paper and reassemble them.
  6. Regularly clean the inside of the machine and coffee outlet with a clean, damp cloth.

Cause 5: Grid Plate Is Blocked

Have you had a long companionship with your Nespresso Essenza Mini? Then, it must be overburdened with the coffee grinds. Tiny coffee grinds can accumulate in the grid plate with time, disrupting its function and, of course, your mood.

What is A Grid Plate?

The grid plate is the place where the coffee leaves the pod. This pyramid-shaped grid plate has many pyramid-shaped holes that press against the capsule’s foil lid. When you press the brew button, the pressure develops inside the coffee capsule. It pushes the capsule foil against the raised profiles of the grid plate which bursts the foil and allows the water to go through the capsule and extract the coffee, which runs through the coffee spout into your cup finally.

Solution: Clean The Grid Plate

Pull the lever up and look for the grid plate behind the coffee spout of your coffee maker. You will find the dirty pyramid shape plate there, scrub it using a soapy toothbrush. After that, run a water-cleansing brew cycle by pushing the Lungo button. To know the details, see the section “Prime Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 2 (Cause 1)”

Cause 6: Nespresso Is AirLock

Your Essenza Mini has become angry with you because you didn’t take care of it and operated it with an empty water tank, and now it has become airlocked.

  • Air Pocket/Bubbles Formation

When you run a brew with an empty water tank, your machine starts blowing air through it. This air gets stuck in your machine in the form of tiny packets, which we call “Air Pockets,” and this problem is mentioned as an “Airlock”. Due to this, your brewer makes a loud “whooshing” sound because the water tank is running dry.

Will it resolve if I fill the water tank? No! Even if you fill the water tank, your brewer will still have the airlock issue.

How To Resolve Nespresso Air Lock Issue?

Now thinking about how to do settlements with your coffee maker? I have solutions. Let’s try!

Solution 1: Run Multiple Brew Cycles (Without Coffee Pod)

To get rid of the airlock issue, you have to cycle out the air bubbles from your Essenza Mini by following the steps below:

  1. Lift the lever up and down to remove the capsule.
  2. Fill the water tank.
  3. Make sure the water tank is properly positioned and connected to its base.
  4. Place a container under the coffee spout.
  5. Now, press the brew button multiple times (Espresso/Lungo) to start brewing/until water comes through the spout.
  6. Lift the lever and check the area where you place the pod; if there is steam or water, you may have resolved the problem.
  7. Once you see the steam or water in the pod holder, close the lever and run 4-5 brews.
  8. Possibly, the air will come out in the first dispense.
  9. However, after a second or third try, your brewer will sound normal and start working properly.
  10. Now, place the capsule and brew your favorite coffee!

Note: If your coffee maker has a big air bubble, then it will take a longer time to start dispensing. Therefore, continuously press the brew button until the water starts dispensing out of the coffee spout.

Solution 2: Attach & Detach The Water Tank

Let’s do another process to cycle out air bubbles from your Nespresso Essenza Mini.

  1. Fill the water tank with water up to the MAX FILL line.
  2. Now, attach and detach the water tank to the brewer 4-5 times to ensure it inserts securely into place each time with the sound of a click.
  3. Continue to press the brew button (Espresso or Lungo) for at least 10-15 minutes until the water starts dispensing out of the nozzle.

Solution 3: Let The Brewer Rest!

Fill the water tank up to the MAX FILL line and insert it in its place securely (you will hear a clicking sound). Let your brewer rest for 1-2 hours, and after this period, turn it on to see whether it is working properly.

Cause 7: Water Tank Base Is Dirty

Remove the water tank and check the base where you place the tank. If it is clean, then ok, but if not, then it may be blocking the passage of water from the tank to the brewing unit.

Solution: Scrub The Base With A Brush

Dip a non-abrasive and lint-free cloth in the mixture of any odorless detergent and hot water, and wash the sides of the tank to remove the slime and dirt built up on the sides and corners of the tank. Scrub out the build-up on the bottom and base using a soft bristle brush and then rinse with hot water.

Cause 8: Clogged Coffee Spout

When the capsule tears, the coffee grounds also enter into the coffee spout along with your coffee, and they get stuck there. Now, the question is, “How to de-block the coffee spout?” Let’s do it!

Solution: Unclog Coffee Spout & Rinse

So, to remove the stuck coffee grounds, follow the steps below.

  1. Take a paper clip and insert it inside the coffee spout. You can insert the paper clip about 5cm inside of it.
  2. So, pop it until you find the place where the coffee grounds have been stuck.
  3. Move the paper clip inside the coffee spout to loosen the grounds.
  4. After this, run a cleansing cycle without inserting the capsule, and the loose grounds will dispense with water. To know the details, see the section “Prime Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 2 (Cause 1)”

Cause 9: Water Pump Is Not Pumping Water

If nothing is coming out of your Nespresso Essenza Mini, then maybe the water pump is malfunctioning. So, let’s check whether your Nespresso pump is working properly or not. Switch off your brewer. Detach the water tank. Take a baster and pour some drops of water into the indent in the base where the water tank valve connects. Now, switch on your machine and press the brew button to see whether the pump sucks the water drops and makes a normal sound. If yes, then ok, but if the pump doesn’t suck the water drops and make a loud noise, then there may be an issue with the water pump or any internal pipes.

The pump often malfunctions due to the development of an airlock in the internal water pump, scales, or any loose wire. Let’s discuss its solution!

Solution 1: Activate The Pump System Of Nespresso Essenza Mini

If you last operated your machine with an empty water tank, then follow the process below for reactivation of the pump system.

  1. Ensure the water level in the water tank is up to the MAX FILL line.
  2. Press the “Lungo” button.
  3. Open the lever and position it towards the back as long as the water has stopped flowing.
  4. After a few seconds, the water will start flowing in the system.
  5. Close the lever; the water should now flow from the coffee outlet.
  6. Press the “Lungo” button again to stop the flow of water.
  7. Your Nespresso pump has now been primed.

Solution 2: Contact Nespresso

If the pump is not making any sound (which means not working at all), then the solution is to contact Nespresso Customer Service and send your Nespresso Essenza Mini for repair (If the machine is in the warranty period, then you have to pay nothing for repair).

Problem 3: Coffee Comes Out Very Slowly Of My Nespresso Essenza Mini

Were you in a hurry for a meeting in the morning, and your Essenza Mini started acting like your lazy friend? Ugh! They both are lovely but at the same time dramatic. Lots of cackles! Coming to the sad reality that your coffee maker is dispensing coffee very slowly, as it will take an hour to fill your cup. No doubt, Nespresso Essenza Mini is a durable machine but like other electronics, it can also malfunction. Now, what to do as your brain machinery can’t work without having caffeine fuel? No need to be worried! I am here with a list of possible problems and their solutions. So, let’s check these!

Cause 1: Use Of Finer Ground Coffee

The flow of coffee basically depends on the “Coffee variety” up to which extent the coffee beans have grounded. A larger contact area boosts the rate of coffee extraction. Finer ground coffee has more surface area, hence a higher extraction rate. This results in a greater level of concentration (stronger coffee). Moreover, the brewing parameters must be changed appropriately. We can reduce the amount of brewing time with a greater extraction rate. A finer grind will also minimize contact time by reducing the flow rate.

Solution: Use Medium Ground Coffee

To make the flow rate better, try a coffee that is coarse/medium ground. However, the grind size should not be too coarse as it will brew under-extracted coffee, and the taste of the coffee will be sour, weak, and underdeveloped.

If you don’t want to purchase grounded coffee, then buy whole coffee beans and grind them in the grinder according to your need.

Cause 2: Wrong Capsule Selection (Making Lungo With Espresso Capsule)

Using a thing for a purpose that is not meant to be, then the results will obviously be opposite to the prediction. Therefore, if you are trying to brew Lungo from the Espresso capsule, then the flow rate will obviously get affected.

Solution: Use The Right Type Of Capsule

While creating espresso, use an espresso capsule, and the same with lungos. On the box, you can see what kind of coffee the coffee capsules are meant for. For each variety of coffee, the machine’s water pressure and coffee grind should be properly matched. It’s likely that if you mix up the coffee capsule, the coffee won’t come out, or coffee grounds will go into your cup.

Cause 3: Using Incompatible Third-Party Capsules

Your Nespresso will brew best with its compatible capsule. The third-party capsule manufacturers most often manufacture large or small capsules that are a misfit in your Nespresso machines. Therefore, proper brewing doesn’t occur and coffee comes out slowly from the coffee spout.

Solution: Use Original Nespresso Capsules

If you want to brew a perfect cup of coffee that dispenses within a standard time (at a standard flow rate), then always use original Nespresso Capsules. These capsules have the right thickness and perforation, so your coffee machine works optimally.

Cause 4: Build-Up Of Coffee Oils & Residues

Can Nespresso Essenza Mini get clogged? Yes, it can, and one of the common reasons for the slow or poor coffee flow is the accumulation of coffee oils, residues, and water scales (minerals, calcium, magnesium). This scale build-up can occur in any part of your coffee maker, such as the coffee spout, brewing unit, or pod holder assembly, and interrupt the coffee flow, taste, and odor of your coffee.

Solution: Unclog Nespresso Essenza Mini By Descaling

How do you fix a clogged Essenza Mini machine? Yes, you have to descale your Nespresso Essenza Mini machine. To know the descaling process, see the section “Descale Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 1 (Cause 1)”.

Cause 5: Air Bubbles Development

You may have run your Essenza Mini with an empty water tank, which has led to the formation of air bubbles inside your machine. These air bubbles interrupt the flow of coffee and may cause total blockage or slow coffee dispensing.

Solution: Remove Air Bubbles From Your Coffee Machine

The best way to remove air bubbles is to run multiple brew cycles (without a coffee pod) in your machine. To know the steps of purging the air out of your Nespresso machine, see the section “How To Resolve Nespresso Air Lock Issue” under “Problem 2 (Cause 6)” discussed above.

Cause 6: Coffee Spout Is Blocked

The coffee flow is also affected by the blockage in the coffee nozzle/spout. The coffee nozzle has frequent interaction with water and coffee, so it easily gets clogged with water minerals and coffee sediments. This blockage will narrow the passage, and the flow of coffee slows down.

Solution: Unclog The Coffee Spout With Paper Clip

Do clean the coffee spout and get your Essenza Mini in good working condition again. To know the detailed procedure, see the section “Unclog The Coffee Spout & Rinse” under “Problem 2 (Cause 8)” mentioned above in this article.

Cause 7: Inside Area Of The Pod Holder Is Dirty

The capsule holder is a vital part of Pod holder assembly and plays a major role in the brewing process. This is the place from where the coffee brewing process will start through the poking of the capsule. So if this area is dirty or clogged, the coffee flow will obviously get interrupted.

Solution: Clean The Inside Area With A Soft Cloth

Get the normal coffee flow again by cleaning the capsule holder. Let’s do it!

  1. First of all, shut down and unplug your Essenza Mini.
  2. Now, lift the lever to completely open the pod holder.
  3. Take a clean, non-abrasive, damp, lint-free soapy cloth and clean the rough area inside that faces the foiled side of the coffee pod.

Problem 4: Too Long Or Too Short Coffee Extraction In My Nespresso Essenza Mini

Is your espresso shot running too fast or slow? Does your coffee taste sour or bitter? No problem, let’s discuss it! I love to get a hot cup of coffee early in the morning to kick-start my day. I started making my coffee 20-30 minutes before going to the office because I knew the extraction time is 25-30 minutes. One day, it was about 30 minutes, but my coffee wasn’t brewed yet. It was frustrating! So, if you are also facing the same issue, then scroll down to know its reasons and solutions.

Cause 1: Machine Is Dirty

The dirty machine is one of the most common reasons why the coffee flow isn’t normal. The water contents, coffee sediments, and dirt particles build up in the machine with time and cause blockage inside your coffee maker.

Solution: Descale/Clean Your Machine

To keep your machine in good working condition, periodically descale your coffee maker every 3-6 months. Thus, if you are facing the current issue, then immediately clean and descale your Essenza Mini. To know the details see the sections “Descale Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 1 (Cause 1)” & “How To Clean My Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 2 (Cause 4)” discussed above.

Cause 2: Sediments Build-Up In Coffee Spout

When a liquid passes through the nozzle, the accumulation of sediments, coffee grounds, and oils is pretty normal. So, it’s obvious that your machine needs proper cleaning after a time period, and if you don’t pay attention, then the result will be the machine’s malfunctioning. However, it is not a big issue. Scroll down and get to know how to resolve this issue!

Solution: Unclog The Spout With A Paperclip

Unclogging and cleaning of coffee spout is a straightforward process that you can do yourself using a paper clip or Q-tip. To know the details see the section “Unclog The Coffee Spout & Rinse” under “Problem 2 (Cause 8)” mentioned above.

Cause 3: Dirty Grid Plate

The grid plate is present behind the coffee spout, and it accumulates a lot of coffee grounds. Thus, it often becomes dirty and affects the flow of coffee. Let’s make it clean!

Solution: Clean The Grid Plate With A Soft Brush

To clean the grid plate, use a toothbrush and gently brush it to get rid of accumulated coffee grounds. To know the details see the section “Clean the Grid Plate” under “Problem 2 (Cause 5)” written above.

Cause 4: Incorrect Water Volume Programming

If your regular coffee takes a long or short extraction time, you may have wrongly programmed your Essenza Mini. It happens when you push the brew button to start dispensing and press it again before the completion of the brewing process. No problem, let’s resolve your problem!

Solution: Reset Nespresso Essenza Mini To Factory Default Settings

Change in the coffee volume is not a big problem as you can easily restore the coffee volume. Follow the steps mentioned below to reprogram to the factory settings;

  1. Turn off your Nespresso Essenza Mini.
  2. Press and hold the Lungo button for 5 seconds.
  3. LEDs will blink fast 3 times after pressing the Lungo button.
  4. The blinking of LEDs confirms that factory settings have been restored.
  5. After that, LEDs will continue to blink normally, indicating the machine is heating up.
  6. Once the machine is heated up, the lights will stop blinking and become steady.
  • How Do I Manually Reset The Water Volume?

You can reprogram the volume of your Espresso and Lungo according to your tastes.

  1. Ensure your Nespresso Essenza Mini is switched on.
  2. Open the lever completely and insert the capsule.
  3. Close the lever.
  4. Put your coffee cup on the drip tray plate.
  5. Press and maintain pressure on the selected coffee button (Espresso or Lungo), and your machine will start brewing.
  6. When you reach the desired volume, release the button.

Problem 5: Why Is There No Light Indicator On My Nespresso Essenza Mini?

Every morning you just want a hot coffee cup. Yes! Every coffee lover wants it! But what happens? Is there no light (lights off) on your Nespresso coffee maker? Don’t worry! Every problem has a solution; let’s find it out!

Cause 1: Machine Is Off

If there is no light indicator on your Nespresso, then you may haven’t turned it on.

Solution: Press Any Brew Button To Turn Machine On

First of all, plug your machine into a grounded outlet securely. Then, press either the Lungo or Espresso button to turn your machine on.

Cause 2: Problem With The Outlet

If there are no light indicators on your machine, then maybe you are plugging it into a defaulted outlet. Apart from this, the outlet may be overloaded with many appliances, that’s why your Nespresso is not getting the required voltage.

Solution: Plug Into A Different Outlet

It is always best to plug your Nespresso into a separate grounded outlet. Furthermore, also check if the plug is functional or not. If there is any issue with the plug, then call the electrician.

Cause 3: Fuse Is Damaged

If your machine is not turning on, then maybe the fuse has blown.

Solution: Contact Nespresso

If your machine is still not working then better is to contact Nespresso or seek the help of an experienced technician. To know the contact details see the section “When to seek professional help”.

Cause 4: Insufficient Voltage

Your Nespresso required a specific voltage to be operated. Therefore, If it doesn’t receive this voltage, then it will not turn on/operational.

Solution: Provide Compatible Voltage To Nespresso

The solution to this issue is to provide your Nespresso with its required voltage of 220-240 V~ (50-60 Hz, 1200-1310 W). If there is a voltage difference, then contact an electrician to resolve the matter.

Cause 5: Machine In Power-Saving Mode

Your Nespresso has a special built-in feature that turns your machine off after 9 minutes of inactivity. You can also change the time from 9-30 minutes. This feature is to lessen energy consumption.

Solution: Wake Up Your Nespresso

It is not a problem! If your machine has turned to Auto-off mode and you want to brew coffee, then just wake up your machine by pressing one of the brew buttons (Espresso or Lungo).

Problem 6: Troubleshooting The Irregular Coffee Flow In My Nespresso Essenza Mini

Are you getting too much or too low coffee in your cup? Your Nespresso Essenza Mini is misbehaving and dispensing the pour volume according to his will. What an attitude! However, you can tackle your Essenza Mini mood swings by applying the solutions mentioned below. Let’s first troubleshoot the issue with your Essenza Mini!

Cause 1: Water Tank Is Mispositioned Or Empty

Is my water tank misplaced? If you are facing an issue of unusual coffee flow with your Nespresso Essenza Mini, then the most possible reason is the misplaced or empty water tank.  Let’s resolve this issue!

Solution: Fill & Place The Water Tank Properly

First, detach the water tank and fill it with fresh potable water up to the MAX FILL line. Then, place it back securely on its base (it will produce a clicking sound).

Cause 2: Wrong Programming Of Water Volume

The reason why the coffee flow is irregular is that you may have misprogrammed the coffee volume. Let’s resolve the issue!

Solution: Reprogram The Water Volume

Resetting the coffee volume is not a big deal! Just follow the steps mentioned in the section “Reset Nespresso Essenza Mini To Factory Default Settings” under “Problem 4 (Cause 4)”.

Cause 3: Old Or Mispositioned Capsule

Maybe the capsule you are using is not fresh, or you are inserting the capsule wrongly in the pod holder. If you use an old/expired capsule, it will not brew the desired coffee volume. Similarly, the mispositioned capsule will not get punctured properly, and ultimately, you will not get the desired amount of brewed coffee. Let’s resolve the problem!

Solution: Insert Fresh Capsule Correctly

To brew a perfect cup of coffee, always use a fresh capsule. For right capsule insertion see the section “Insert capsule properly” under “Problem 2 (Cause 3)”.

Cause 4: Lever Is Not Locked

It often happens that you lift the lever, insert the capsule and then forget to properly lock the lever. Therefore, crosscheck before pressing the brew button whether you have locked the lever correctly. If the lever isn’t closed, then the capsule will not get punctured accurately, and ultimately the coffee flow will be irregular.

Solution: Lock The Lever Properly

After inserting the capsule, lower the lever towards you and push it down forcefully until it gets locked with a sudden jerk. The lever must be leveled with the head of your machine.

Cause 5: Essenza Mini Is Dirty/Clogged

If you have tried all the tricks above, but the coffee flow is still irregular, then your Nespresso is dirty/clogged. Due to its continuous use, your machine can get clogged by water minerals (calcium and magnesium) and coffee grounds. This build-up can interrupt the coffee flow. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain your machine and clean it periodically and descale it after 3-6 months. Let’s resolve your problem!

Solution: Descale & Clean Your Essenza Mini

To get the usual coffee flow clean and descale your Essenza Mini. To know the details see the sections “Descale Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 1 (Cause 1)” & “How To Clean My Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 2 (Cause 4)” discussed above.

Cause 6: Water Pump Is Not Working Properly

If the coffee flow is still irregular, maybe the water pump is malfunctioning. To check whether your Nespresso pump is working properly or not see the section “Water pump is not pumping the water” under “Problem 2 (Cause 9).

Solution 1: Prime/Activate The Water Pump

If you have run your appliance with an empty water tank, then the water pump is airlocked. To resolve the issues, follow the steps mentioned in the section “Activate The Pump System Of Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 2 (Cause 9)”.

Solution 2: Contact Nespresso

If the pump is not working at all (no sound/loud sound), then there may be any loose wire inside. Now, the solution is to contact Nespresso Customer Service and send your Nespresso Essenza Mini for repair. If the machine is in the warranty period, then you have to pay nothing for repair; however, if not then you have to bear expenses. In such conditions, you can also contact any experienced technician. For details see the section “When To Seek Professional Help”, mentioned below.

Cause 7: Technical Issue

If you have tried all the solutions mentioned above and your Essenza Mini is still not working, then there may be an internal technical issue. Maybe the issue is with any wire or valve that can’t be fixed by yourself and needs replacing. So, let’s discuss its solution!

Solution: Parts Repair Or Replacement

Contact Nespresso for repair or replacement of the defective parts. If your machine is under warranty period then you have to pay nothing but if not, then you have to bear the expenses. Problem 7: Why Is There Leakage In The Capsule Area Of My Nespresso Essenza Mini?

Leakage can be a hectic mess! So, without wasting time, let’s move towards its possible causes and solutions!

Cause 1: Mispositioned Capsule

If the capsule area is leaking (water in the capsule container), then you must insert the capsule at an incorrect angle.

Solution: Place The Capsule At The Right Angle

For proper insertion of the capsule in the pod holder, see the section “Insert capsule properly” under “Problem 2 (Cause 3)”.

Cause 2: Clogged Grid Plate

The second possible reason for the leakage in the capsule area can be the dirty grid plate. The leakage happens when the water can’t properly pass through the capsule (enter or exit) because the grid plate has been blocked by coffee grinds.

Solution: Scrub The Grid Plate With Soft Brush

Pull the lever up and look for the grid plate behind the coffee spout of your coffee maker. If you find this pyramid-shaped plate dirty, then clean it. Check the cleaning section in “Clean the Grid Plate” under “Problem 2 (Cause 5)” above for more details.

Problem 8: My Nespresso Essenza Mini Is Making A Partial Cup Of Coffee.

My morning always starts with a large cup of coffee that is about to overspill. LOL! I think every coffee lover wants to have a large amount of caffeine in the morning to kick-start their days. However, what if your coffee maker refuses to fill your cup to the edge? It will be disappointing. So, is your Essenza Mini creating the same problem for you? No need to be worried! Let’s find out its possible reasons and solutions!

Cause 1: Water Shortage While Brewing

The most likely cause of a partial cup of coffee is that water in the water tank isn’t enough to brew you a full cup of coffee. And sometimes, it happens that the brewing process stops because of the water shortage in the water tank. Let’s resolve the issue!

Solution 1: Refill The Water Tank

It is better to adequately fill the water tank before starting the brewing process. However, if the process has stuck due to the low level of water in the water tank, then don’t worry! Here, I will discuss how to refill the water tank after an interrupted brewing process.

So, how to restart the process!!

  1. Stop your machine by pressing the blinking button.
  2. Let the machine for 2-3 minutes to cool it down.
  3. Open the handle to remove the capsule.
  4. Run a water-only rinse cycle by following the procedure mentioned in “Prime Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 2 (Cause 1)”.
  5. Now, start your coffee brewing process again and enjoy!

Cause 2: Improper Water Volume Settings

The second common reason is improper factory settings. You may have messed up with the coffee volume. So, what to do now, as you have reset the coffee volume, but nothing is working?

Don’t worry, as every problem has a solution. So, let’s uncover it!

Solution: Reset Factory Default Settings

So, when you have done everything mentioned above, now it’s time to set your Essenza Mini back to Factory settings.

It is not a hard nut to crack! Just follow the steps mentioned in the section “Reset Nespresso Essenza Mini To Factory Default Settings” under “Problem 4 (Cause 4)” written above in this article.

Default Factory Settings:

  • Lungo: 110ml/3.75 oz
  • Espresso: 40ml/1.35 oz

Cause 3: Your Essenza Mini Is Clogged

As you know, maintenance and cleaning is the key to keeping your appliances in good working condition. So, the reason behind your Nespresso Essenza Mini not producing a full cup may be the build-up of mineral scales or coffee oil sediments. This build-up can occur in different parts of your Nespresso Essenza Mini, such as the heating element, nozzle, grid plate, etc.

The frequency of mineral scale formation varies with water quality; e.g. if you are using hard water (high in calcium and magnesium), the more frequently your coffee maker will get clogged. It is recommended to descale your machine once every 3-6 months or after making approx. 300 cups of coffee.

Solution: Descale Your Machine Using A Descaling Kit

Descale your coffee maker to get a full cup of hot coffee again. To know the detailed procedure, see the section “Descale Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 1 (Cause 1)” mentioned above in this article.

Problem 9: The Water Is Not Coming Out Of Spout In My Nespresso Essenza Mini.

Wanted to brew hot water for your favorite soap, but Essenza Mini is in the mood to tease you. No problem! Let’s find out the possible causes of “water not coming out of the spout” and their easy solutions!

Cause 1: Your Nespresso Is Switched Off

No water dispensing from the coffee outlet, then you may haven’t turned on your Nespresso Essenza Mini. First of all, check whether you have plugged your machine into the wall outlet or net. Then, see if the brew buttons (lungo and espresso) are lit. If they aren’t, then your machine may not be turned on.

Solution: Switch On Your Essenza Mini

How to Turn on Nespresso Essenza Mini? It is very simple. First, plug your machine in a grounded outlet and then press either the Lungo or Espresso button to turn your machine on. LED lights in the buttons will illuminate on pressing one of the buttons. Congratulations! Your Nespresso Essenza Mini has switched on!

Cause 2: Empty Water Tank

If there is no water in the water tank, then what your Essenza Mini will dispense for you? So, check if there is water present inside the water tank, and if yes, then check whether it is adequate for brewing.

Solution: Fill The Water Tank

Remove the water tank lid. Pour fresh and potable water inside the water tank up to the MAX FILL line. Now, start brewing again. For more details, see the section “Water Shortage While Brewing” under “Problem 8 (Cause 1)” written above in this article.

Cause 3: Water Tank Is Mispositioned

If you are facing the “no water coming out from the coffee outlet” issue, then maybe the water supply source is impaired, that is, the water tank. So, if the water tank is mispositioned, then how can you get anything, even the water, from your Essenza Mini?

Solution: Place The Water Tank Properly

Turn your machine off for safety reasons, and then detach the water tank. Now, place it again on the brewer and make sure that it has made a secure connection with the lock tab slots on the brewer. While placing the water tank, you will hear a clicking sound that indicates its secure placement on its base.

Cause 4: Air Bubbles Have Formed

If your Nespresso is not dispensing water, then it may not be its fault but yours. How? Let me tell you! Maybe you have tried to operate your machine with an empty water tank, due to which your machine has sucked air present in the water tank instead of water. So as a result, there have been developed air bubbles in water passages that interrupt the water flow. This situation is known as “machine is airlocked”. Let’s find out the solution!

Solution: Remove Air Bubbles

To get your Essenza Mini in good working condition again, remove the air bubbles. Follow the steps in the section “How To Resolve Air Lock Issue” under “Problem 2 (Cause 6)” written above in this article.

Cause 5: Nespresso Needs Descaling

One of the common reasons behind all the problems is the dirty (scaled/blocked) machine. As your coffee maker has frequent interaction with the water and coffee, thus the water scales(calcium and magnesium) and coffee sediments build up inside it. This can lead to blockage and, ultimately, malfunctioning of your machine. Therefore, it is necessary to descale your coffee maker once every 3-6 months or after making 300 coffee cups.

Solution: Descale Your Essenza Mini

Transform your Nespresso Essenza Mini into a perfect working appliance again by descaling. To know the detailed procedure, see the section “Descale Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 1 (Cause 1)” mentioned above in this article.

Cause 6: The Water Pump Has Malfunctioned

Turn your Nespresso Essenza Mini on, and if you hear no voice, then the water pump has become malfunctioned. Therefore, your machine is pouring no water because its pump is not working at all.

Besides, if the pump is making loud noise but not pumping the water then there is an airlock issue. The water pump sucks air in when you operate the appliance with an empty water tank. As a result, the pump starts making loud noises when it is on. Let’s find out the solution!

Solution 1: Reactivate The Water Pump

Prime the water pump by following the steps mentioned in the section “Activate The Pump System Of Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 2 (Cause 9)”.

Solution 2: Repair Or Replacement

If your brewer lies in the second situation, that is, the pump is not working at all (no sound produced), then there must be a loose wire inside or the pump is faulted. Thus, contact Nespresso for repair. For contact details, see the section “When to Seek Professional Help”.

Cause 7: Thermal Fuse Is Blown

If the water pump is working and you also have descaled your coffee maker but still water isn’t coming out of the outlet, then chances of a blown thermal fuse are there. So, you must think about what you have done that led to thermal fuse failure. So, let’s first know about its function!

What is a thermal fuse? It is a safety device that opens the circuit against overheating. It cuts the power to the heating element when the temperature of the device is raised above the preset point. However, unlike the circuit breaker, the thermal fuses don’t reset themselves on dropping in temperature.

The next question is, what causes a thermal fuse to fail? The main reason may be prolonged exposure to heat/high temperature due to the massive current situation. The operating temperature varies according to the model but is generally between 135 to 157 degrees Celsius, and you may have exposed it to a temperature above this limit. Can a thermal fuse be repaired? Let’s find out the answer!

Solution: Contact Nespresso

The thermal fuse can’t be repaired but replaced, so a better option is to contact Nespresso and ask for assistance. If your coffee maker still has the warranty, then you will cost nothing. Get to know the details in the section “When to Seek Professional Help”.

Problem 10: Troubleshooting The Irregular Blinking In Nespresso Essenza Mini

Illumination of lights is the only way Nespresso Essenza Mini can communicate with you. So, if your machine is blinking irregularly, then it must be an alert for you. Let’s check it out!

Condition 1: Slow, Steady Blinking

You switched on your coffee maker, and the LED buttons on your Nespresso started blinking slowly and steadily. What can be the reason behind this alert? Let’s find out!

Cause: The Machine Is Heating Up

It is not an issue, as your Nespresso is just warming up.

Solution: Wait For 25-30 seconds

It may take between 25 and 30 seconds for the blinking light to become steady. Once the lights become steady, your coffee maker will be ready to use.

Condition 2: Fast & Steady Flashing

Sometimes, it happens that your machine starts blinking in a way that is not usual for you, such as “fast and steady flashing of LED lights on the coffee buttons. At this point, you are just blank and unable to understand the meaning of this blinking. However, no more worries now, as we are going to discuss the cause and solution too!

Cause 1: Nespresso Is In Descaling Mode

Last time you descale your machine and maybe not complete the process; that’s why your machine is still in descaling mode. This blinking is for alerting you to exit the descaling mode.

Solution: Exit Descaling Mode

To exit the descaling mode, press and hold both Lungo and Espresso buttons at the same time for 5-6 seconds.

Cause 2: The Machine Is Overheated

Another reason for such kind of irregular blinking may be an alert for machine overheating. Your Nespresso is alerting you that it has become overheated. Overheating can lead to serious outcomes such as damage to the machine or maybe to yourself also.

Solution: Let It Rest!

Switch off and unplug your machine and let it rest for at least 30 minutes. After the required time, switch your on again and check if it is still in the same mode or not. If the lights are still flashing in the same manner, then contact Nespresso.

Condition 3: Fast Triple Flashing

Is your Nespresso flashing thrice at a fast pace? Let’s find out the reason!

Cause: An Electronic Error

If your Nespresso Essenza Mini is flashing fast, then there may be an electronic error in it. There are many wires and connections in your coffee maker that can get loose or damaged over time and lead to the machine malfunctioning.

Solution: Contact Nespresso

Contact Nespresso or seek the help of an experienced technician. Find Nespresso Contact details in the section “When To Seek Professional Help”.

Problem 11: Why My Nespresso Essenza Mini Machine Isn’t Heating?

There are two points to take into consideration whether your machine is not heating up at all or it is not heating to the extent it should be. Let’s discuss both situations one by one starting with the latter one!

Cause 1: Your Nespresso Is Clogged

You may haven’t cleaned and descale your machine for a long time, and now there have been built-up scales inside your machine, especially on the heating element. Scale build-up basically depends on the quality of water you are using in your machine, e.g. if the water has high calcium and magnesium quantities, then scales will develop more frequently. Let’s resolve the problem!

Solution: Descale Your Nespresso Essenza Mini

Its solution is to simply decalcify and clean your machine. To know the details see the sections “Descale Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 1 (Cause 1)”.

Cause 2: Thermoblock Is Damaged

If you are always getting a cold cup of coffee, then it’s obvious that your Nespresso Essenza Mini is broken. And most possibly, the damaged part is the “Thermoblock”, which heats the water before dispensing it from the faucet.

Solution: Replace The Thermoblock

Can I replace the Thermoblock in my coffee machine? As it is a technical task, it is better to seek the help of an experienced technician. However, if your machine has a warranty, then contact Nespresso. For details see the section “When to Seek Professional Help”.

Cause 3: Thermostat Is Damaged

The second reason behind getting cold coffee all the time is a damaged thermostat. The thermostat regulates the temperature (how hot the drink gets) and ensures the temperature doesn’t get too high.

Solution: Replace The Thermostat

So, the question is, can the thermostat be repaired? No, it can just be replaced. Then how to replace the thermostat? Due to the high technicalities in replacing this part, it is better to seek the help of a technician. For details scroll down and read the section “When to Seek Professional Help”.

Problem 12: My Essenza Mini Coffee Machine Doesn’t Pierce The Capsule

Is your Essenza mini not poking a hole in the coffee pod? As the capsule does not get pierced so you can’t get coffee at all. Ahh! The worst thing ever to see just by the start of the day. How does the capsule get punctured? The grid plate’s numerous tiny pyramid-shaped holes contact the capsule’s foil cover. When you press the brew button on the Nespresso coffee maker, pressure builds up inside the capsule. By pressing the foil against the raised profile of the plate, the foil is forced to rupture. Let’s find out the main reason why the Nespresso isn’t piercing the capsule!

Cause 1: Wrong Capsule Orientation

One of the most probable reasons is the mispositioned capsule. If you don’t place the capsule in the right direction, then it won’t get interacted with the grid plate and ultimately can’t get punctured.

Solution: Insert The Capsule Correctly

Sometimes it happens that while inserting the capsule, it gets caught at an angle. So, here is the method of how you can securely position the capsule in the right direction. For details, see the section “Insert capsule properly” under “Problem 2 (Cause 3)”.

Cause 2: Lever Not Fully Down

We all think that the lever will get locked by just snapping down. However, it is not like this. And with the partially closed lever, the capsule can never be poked.

Solution:  Lower The Lever Adequately

Just lowering the lever is not enough. To properly close the lever, firmly push it after lowering it until you hear the clicking sound.

Cause 3: Grid Plate Is Clogged

The grid plate is the place where the coffee leaves the pod. This pyramid-shaped grid plate has many pyramid-shaped holes responsible for puncturing the foil of the capsule. Due to direct contact with the coffee, it often gets dirty.

Solution: Unclog & Clean Grid Plate

To know the cleaning process of the grid plate, see the section “Clean the Grid Plate” under “Problem 2 (Cause 5)” mentioned above in this article.

Cause 4: Using Non-Compatible Third-party Capsules

Using third-party capsules is not discouraged, but they must be compatible with your Nespresso machine. Most often, the third-party capsules are mostly bigger or smaller than the original Nespresso capsules. That’s why they can’t be as perfect with your Nespresso machine as the original Nespresso capsules, and obviously, chances are there that they will not be poked by the machine. This can also happen with some reusable pods. In this case, a Nespresso refillable kit can work better as it reuses original Nespresso pods.

Solution 1: Use Compatible Third-Party Capsules

If you want to use third-party capsules, then try to choose the ones that are compatible with your machine.

Nespresso Compatible Third-Party Capsule

Some of the Nespresso Essenza Mini-compatible third-party capsules are mentioned below:

  • Peet’s Coffee Variety Pack – Best Overall.
  • Lavazza Variety Pack – Budget Pick.
  • Café La Llave Decaf – Best Decaf.
  • Starbucks Mild Variety Pack – Best Mild Intensity.
  • Meseta Coffee – Best Organic.
  • L’OR Variety Pack – Best for Lattes.

Non-Compatible Capsule:

Nespresso Dulsao capsules (they are too big).

Solution 2: Use Original Nespresso Capsules

To run a perfect brew with your Nespresso, always try to use original Nespresso capsules, as they best fit with the Nespresso machines.

Cause 5: Nespresso Needs Cleaning

With time, water minerals and coffee sediments have accumulated in your machine, which must be cleared out to keep the machine in good working condition.

Solution: Clean And Descale Your Machine

To know the process of cleaning and descaling in detail, see the sections “Descale Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 1 (Cause 1)” and “How To Clean My Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 2 (Cause 4)” mentioned above in the article.

Nespresso’s Suggestions

If your Nespresso is not piercing the capsule, then do the following things;

  • Fill the water tank to the MAX FILL line and turn the machine on. After that, run a water-only rinse cycle by pressing the Lungo button. (see details in “Prime Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 2; Cause 1).
  • Empty the used capsule container if it is full.
  • Clean the capsule holder with a soapy, non-abrasive, lint-free cloth.

However, if you have tried all the solutions mentioned above and still your Nespresso is not poking the hole, then it is better to take the machine to a professional.

Problem 13: Why Is There Water In The Drip Tray?

The drip tray is a part specific to collecting water/coffee splashes. It is present at the bottom of the machine. Above it, there is a drip tray plate on which you put your coffee cup. So, while dispensing your coffee/hot water, the splashes/overflow get accumulated inside the drips tray to prevent mess.

Cause: Drip Tray Is Full

If you see water in the drip tray, then don’t worry! It’s normal as the purpose of the drip tray is to collect the spills. However, it has a certain capacity to hold water. Therefore, it is better to empty it periodically. Let’s come to the point if you see the drip tray is overflowing; then it must be full.

Solution: Empty The Drip Tray

Take outthe drip tray by pulling it toward you while keeping it level to avoid spills. Now, empty the liquid content into the sink. Replace the drip tray and enjoy brewing once again!

Problem 14: Troubleshooting The Water Is Leaking Under The Machine Problem

Did you find water droplets on the countertop? Is your Nespresso Essenza Mini Leaking? To solve this query, lift your machine after operating it and check for the water pooling below. If there is water, then definitely your Nespresso Essenza Mini is leaking. Let’s discuss its cause and solution!

Cause 1: Water Tank Is Broken

Detach the water tank carefully and fill it with water to the Max. Now, check for any scratches on it. After that, place the tissue paper on the countertop and put the water tank on it to check for any leakage from the water tank. If the tissue paper becomes wet, then definitely the water tank is broken.

Solution: Replace Or Repair

Contact Nespresso to purchase a replacement water tank or go to second-hand parts replacement shops or repair centers.

To find Nespresso Contact details read the section “When to Seek Professional Help”.

Cause 2: Defective Thermoblock Or Internal Pipework

Running the Nespresso machine while it is dismantled to check for water loss is an easy approach to locating leaks. Doing this technique provides a clear insight into potential breakages that might be the source of leaks.

NOTE: The better option is to contact Nespresso because damage can void the warranty.

If this leaking problem persists over time, the boiler may develop a black tint from the constant dropping of water over the hot component.

The pipes and seals may deteriorate due to high temperatures connected with the Nespresso heating component. This happens because as the metal heats up, it expands before cooling and compressing once more.

Solution: Contact Nespresso

You can contact Nespresso or may seek the help of an experienced technician. See details in the section “When to Seek Professional Help”.

Cause 3: Loose Water Pipework Or Pump

A Nespresso machine may experience certain bumps when being used in a home or business, which might cause some water circuit parts to come free and cause leaks.

Solution: Contact Nespresso

The only solution to this problem is to call Nespresso or hire a technician because the issue can’t be self-fixed. See details in the section “When to Seek Professional Help”.

Problem 15: Why is Nespresso Essenza Mini Machine Making Loud Noise And Not Working?

Loud noises coming from your Nespresso machine are a clear sign that it needs to be repaired. Examine the valve, solenoid, coil, pump, and thermal block for any indications of damage. Let’s find the possible causes and their solutions!

Cause 1: Formation Of Air Bubbles

If you have ever run your Nespresso Essenza Mini with an empty water tank, then there must have developed air bubbles inside the machine, as the pump has sucked air instead of water.

Solution: Remove Air Bubbles

To remove the air bubbles, see the section “How To Resolve Air Lock Issue” under “Problem 2 (Cause 6)”.

Cause 2: Water Pump Is Burnt Out

Your espresso maker may make loud noises and cease operating if the pump is burnt out. Pump burnout is when the pump doesn’t function at full capacity or prematurely dies out. It happens when you frequently turn on and off your machine. When the pump is functioning normally, humming and pulsating noises should be heard.

Solution: Contact Nespresso

You can contact Nespresso or may seek the help of an experienced technician. See the contact details below, “When to Seek Professional Help”.

Cause 3: Damaged Valve

Your Nespresso maker’s valve may be jammed open, allowing steam to escape. That is why your Essenza Mini is making loud noises.

Solution: Replace The Damaged Valve

As it seems the valve has been damaged, it’s time for repair or replacement of the part. Does your machine still have a warranty? Great! Contact Nespresso and spend not even a single penny.

For contact details see the section “When to Seek Professional Help”.

In case, your machine has crossed the warranty period, then be ready to bear the expenses whether at Nespresso or a technician shop.

Cause 4: Damaged/Clogged Thermoblock

Unless it is clogged, your espresso machine’s thermoblock, also known as the generator or boiler, warms the water in preparation for brewing or steam. The pump has to work harder and may become noisy if it becomes blocked.

Solution: Replace The Damaged Thermoblock

For repair and replacement assistance, contact Nespresso. You may hire an experienced technician if the warranty period has over because in both cases you have to spend money. So, no difference! For details, see the section “When to Seek Professional Help”.

Problem 16: Why Is Nespresso Essenza Mini Machine Not Pumping Water?

You switch on your Nespresso Essenza Mini, and the pump starts making a sound, but nothing comes out of the nozzle. Nespresso Essenza Mini not pumping water means you will get no coffee. Ugh! Nothing can be worse than this. No problem! Let’s resolve your issue!

Cause 1: Nespresso Needs Descaling

Regular maintenance and cleaning is the key to a smooth functional coffee maker. Furthermore, Nespresso recommends that users descale their machine after every 3-6 months. Therefore, if your Essenza Mini is not pumping the water, then maybe scales have been developed in it. The frequency of scale build-up generally depends on the water type (hard water can lead to more frequent scale build-up).

Solution: Descale Your Essenza Mini

To know the details of the descaling process, see the section “Descale Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 1 (Cause 1)”.

Cause 2: The Machine Needs To Be Primed

If your Nespresso Essenza Mini is making a fine humming sound by turning it on, then obviously, the condition of the water pump is fine. However, if it is still not pumping the water, then you need to prime the pump system. It often happens when you use your machine for the first time or after a long period of storage. Let’s resolve the issue!

Solution 1: Prime Your Nespresso

A simple fix for a Nespresso machine that won’t pump water is Priming/Activation. To know the details see the section “Prime Nespresso Essenza Mini” under “Problem 2 (Cause 1)”.

Cause 3: Machine Is Airlocked

Operating the machine without a water tank in place or empty can cause the pump to suck air inside. These air bubbles block the passage of liquid in the coffee maker and the pump can’t pump the water or coffee.

Solution: Remove Air Bubbles

To resolve the issue, see the section ““How To Resolve Air Lock Issue” under “Problem 2 (Cause 6)” mentioned above.
